Education

Empowering through Education

Improving every lifesaver's ability so they can provide support to the community whilst also developing their own skills.

Successful life saving is accomplished through volunteer lifesavers having specific, relevant and up-to-date training and education. Lifesavers apply their knowledge and skills to provide the community with a service of prevention and protection. It is for this reason that the North Coast Branch places a high priority on member training and education.

From just the young age of 10, a lifesaver-in-training can gain their Resuscitation Certificate. From there, the basic level of education needed to become a patrolling member is the Surf Rescue Certificate (from age 13) and the Bronze Medallion (from age 15).

Members can then choose to advance their education, skills and participation pathways within the club by gaining any number of awards through the completion of nationally recognised courses.

All courses delivered are nationally accredited which provides opportunities for the knowledge and skills gained through life saving to be used for securing or maintaining employment outside of the life saving movement.

All patrol members and surf life saving competitors are required to complete an annual skills maintenance (formerly known as proficiency) at the start of each season. This is a skills refresher, not a test, and covers all requirements set out by Surf Life Saving NSW.

Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators (TAFs) are members who choose to further upskill and dedicate their time to provide training and education to new and existing members.
